5 Items You Can’t Put in a skip (And How To Get Rid Of Them)

Items You Can’t Put in a skip – While skip hire is a very convenient way of removing all manner of waste from your home or workplace, there are certain items that you aren’t permitted to place into a skip, due to the highly specialised requirements that apply in terms of how to handle and dispose of them safely.

Here are just five of the items that we, unfortunately, aren’t able to accept in our skips here at Able Skip Hire Ltd, accompanied by advice on what to do with them instead.

1. Fridges

Fridges frequently contain substances that are very harmful to the environment if they are not disposed of responsibly, such as – in the case of most fridges manufactured before 2000 – Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).

Thankfully, there are many potential ways to get rid of a fridge safely, such as selling it to someone else, making use of your local authority’s collection service or getting in touch with a specialist waste removal company.

2. Tyres

The toxic smoke that tyres release when burned – potentially causing chemical pneumonia if large quantities are inhaled – should help to explain why it is a criminal offence to fail to dispose of tyres properly. Skip hire companies like ourselves are also not covered to get rid of them.

If you can’t find a more inventive way to repurpose your old tyres – such as giving them to the local zoo or sports club – most of the major tyre fitting and car servicing firms have the facilities to take away your old tyres when they fit new ones to your vehicle, and may charge you as little as £2 to do so.

3. Asbestos roofing sheets

The now-banned substance is notoriously lethal when its fibres become airborne, as these can be easily inhaled and cause damage to the lungs. Mesothelioma is one condition commonly caused by asbestos that is almost always fatal, with about half of those diagnosed dying within a year.

It is therefore vital to take the very greatest precautions with this type of waste. We would strongly recommend that you seek advice from a qualified asbestos removal contractor – the Asbestos Removal Contractors Association (ARCA) or Asbestos Control and Abatement Division (ACAD) can give you a list of such companies.

4. Unused paint

Solvent-based paints can be very expensive to safely dispose of, so it shouldn’t be a big surprise that so many skip hire specialists, such as Able Skip Hire Ltd, are unable to accept them.

You could get rid of your remaining paint simply by offering it to friends, family or someone else online – such as via a site like Freecycle or Freegle – to ‘use it up’. You’ve also got the option of ‘drying it out’ by adding something absorbent, such as saw dust, soil or cat litter. Once the paint has dried, you will be able to put the can in your household’s general waste.

5. Unsealed oil

One thing that you absolutely must not do with any type of oil is pour it down a sink or drain, as this can lead to sewer pipes becoming blocked. It can also lead to prosecution.

Thankfully, recycling oil can be as simple as visiting your local recycling and household waste site, with special containers able to be used for oils. You can also reuse cooking oil by soaking small quantities of it into stale bread and feeding it to the birds.

There you have it! Before hiring a skip through ourselves here at Able Skip Hire Ltd, we would suggest that you always take the time to check our FAQs and information on the various types of skips that we provide to avoid disappointment.

Bear in mind that you may also be charged or have the offending items returned to you if you put anything in our skips that we cannot permit. Sorry!
